Stopped here for lunch on our way out of town - it was great! Lots of regulars, which is always a good sign. Tons of healthy options, everything was fresh and tasty. UPDATE: A few months and several visits later I feel like the staff has finally balanced out. Everyone helping everyone. Some of the food items really are delicious. Go for one of the more unique options for the full experience. Dealing with the wait to get in is easy. There are a lot of vintage / antique shops to explore right next door.ORIGINAL: I will say, the ambiance here (once you're inside) is wonderful.. That alone earns it 3 stars, because it has potential, but beyond that, the place needs some work. The food was on par with most other breakfast nooks I've been to, but it was the absolute slowest service I have ever received. Instead of being apologetic, the staff kept finding someone else to blame. It took almost 45 minutes for our food to come after ordering, and we didn't get a refill on water or coffee for the entire hour and a half that we sat at the table, though we needed both about 20 minutes in. Asking another staffer got the "it's not my table" attitude.read more

The walls are always lines with interesting art and new additions come in all the time. The food seems like just a normal breakfast joint, yet when it comes to your table there is some unexpected twist. The tropical toast for example has a mini umbrella on top, along with fruit strewn about. The black bird cafe is highly recommended!read more

It's Okay. The staff are very nice and friendly. The tuna sandwich was good and so was the kids burger that my youngest son ate. However, the chicken sandwich that my oldest son ate sacked. The chicken was thinking, dry, and overcooked he would not eat it even though there was bacon on it. My wife and step mom shared a portobello mushroom burger that came with mushrooms but they weren't portobello and a mountain is sautéed onions for some reason.We would never go back.read more

This place is very popular. I highly recommend arriving before 9:00am if possible otherwise the wait will be long. The food is very good. They do offer semi-Mexican dishes (which are just ok). The rest of the menu which is mostly American fare is solid. You will not be disappointed. read more

Great food selection and portions. Well priced. They have a kids' menu and kids cups which were bonuses. Love family friendly establishments! The food was delicious and fresh, and service was friendly and efficient. Finding parking can be tricky as it's street parking and tables fill up quickly on a hot summer afternoon. This is probably the most difficult reviews I've had to do; I really loved this place been coming here for years, my favorite was the Dos Caballeros Eggs Benedict. Unfortunately, due to lack of proper management they have lost several customers. I went from brunch with a few friends Saturday after the gym. When we showed up there was a wait, I noticed the Bar was available and asked if we could be seated there to avoid the wait. The hostess said that today the Bar was closed because they we doing repairs of plumbing, as a matter a fact they were closing at 2pm that Saturday so they could finish the repairs. The wait was anticipated to be about 40min so we decided to wait. I should have noticed the red flag of any business not taking care of maintainence during business hours while patrons are eating. After a little over 25min wait hostess comes outside and said that they are closing early due to the plumbing issue and would be able to serve us. I decided to talk to the hostess to seer what had happened, she mentioned to me how serious the problem was and that they knew it was bad a few hours earlier. I asked to talk to the manager since I felt that they should have let us know earlier what the issues was so we could decide if we wanted to stay and risk it or go check out some place else. I asked politely if there was anything they could do since we waited 25min and would have to go to another restaurant and wait to be seated. I mentioned i come here often and pretty sure she recognised me. The manager got so offended and made it seem like I was just trying to get something for free. She quickly stated stated and a quicker attitude "that I'm not in the business to give things out for free". To which I replied "no, I understand but you are in the customer service business!" After that she got reasonably more upset and replied "I'm not sure what you expect me to do I'M JUST THE MANAGER!" And "that I would need to talk to owner but she wasn't here right now" This was a utter lie! I've been there enough and have the owner come to my table and introduce herself. While I'm having this exchange with the manager the owner is right behind her, overhearing everything and pretending to look busy. Thought about calling them on their lie but thought this whole scenario spoke volumes. So my party of 4 and about 5 other parties ahead of us had to leave and find another place for brunch. Like I said this is really hard for me to write since this was one of my favorite restuarants; it's small, quaint, was always welcoming and had ahhhmazing food. The whole time while driving their i was perparing my friends for this ahhhmazing food. I really don't appreciate the management team not taking consideration my time and hunger. As a business owner I wasn't asking for anything I wouldn't do for my own clients to appease them.read more

Insanely good breakfast joint hidden from the high-rise, luxury downtown area. It sits next to a quaint antique shop and the cafe itself is cozy. There was a little bit of a wait around brunch time on Saturday, but nothing unreasonable. My boyfriend and I️ ordered quickly and had the food soon after. It was excellent. Obviously made with love and plenty of ingredients! The portions were hearty and generous. Eating local definitely paid off with this place!read more

Formerly the “Best breakfast in town!!!!!” I had to downgrade my review from 5 stars after a recent visit. What they served as “toast” was so undercooked it could only be classified as warm bread. The bacon was the exact opposite of crisp - it was like sloppy wet noodles. The eggs were the only saving grace and were cooked to perfection. They lose one star for the “toast” and one for the bacon flavored wet noodles. I should probably take away another star for lack of consistency, but I’m feeling gracious today. BEST BREAKFAST BURRITOS!!! We aren't from Long Beach and this place was recommended to us from the car rental place we were going through and we were amazed. Parking was hard to find in this small neighborhood and the building itself was small, but we got right in. My husband order orange juice that tasted like they had just freshly squeezed it into his glass! The burritos were perfection! I have been here a few times over the years and cannot figure out what the hype is. There is nothing special about this place. Last time I went they burned by food and I refused to let them remake it because it took to long to even get it. Its also really loud. I had to yell at my friends who were across the table from me. This place is always crowded and for good reason. If you feel like your life to feel like a sitcom- like you enjoy waking up on a Saturday with all your friends after getting wasted the night before and heading to a super cozy, friendly, and delicious breakfast place, this is where it's at. Everything is affordable, well made, and greatly proportioned. There is also a line that goes to Siberia, so I suggest you get drunk on a Tuesday and go Wednesday morning if you are now married to the sitcom imagery. Overall, anything on the South of the Border part of the menu is golden. And they have an array of salsas that just hang out on your table so you know they're all about happy brunchers.read more

This is my second time coming here. The first time customer service was excellent. Food was great no problem. The second time around so much was wrong. My Son had a hair in his fruit, there was a hair on my sample coffee cup. I was charged for my sample coffee cup and an extra drink. When I brought it up there seemed to be a lot of confusion as to what to do. They fixed my check for the drink but charged me for extra coffee and still charged me the wrong amount. When I brought it up they said the total was 36.99 not 34.99 I told them. I was like ok. I got in my car was not happy with their service, so I'm here writing this post. Knowing that this is a popular place, I made sure to get here early. It's a pleasant homey place, not all hip-cute like Starling but clean and comfortable, with surprisingly good art on the walls. The people that work here are very nice, and it was just a good mellow neighborhood vibe all the way around. I had a hard time deciding what to get, and settled on The Scrambler, which was just a whole mess of everything (ham, sausage, mushrooms, green and red peppers, onions, etc etc) scrambled with eggs, then topped off with sour cream and avocado, and served with their breakfast potatoes and a side of toast. Everything was very good, fresh and non-greasy, and their portions are generous. Their coffee was very very good, also. All in all, an awesome breakfast; I look forward to a return visit soon. I love going there for the Baja Burrito even tho I can never finish because it's so huge! The chorizo is great and also their salsas. I definitely recommend their French Toast! My favorite is their special that is stuffed with cream cheese. read more

The workers are always nice, but the last two times I've been the quality of food has changed. I ordered chicken chili Verde and there was not one piece of chicken in there. Last time I ordered spinach omelet and it use to be fresh spinach and now it's canned spinach. Uggghhhread more

I fell for the hype. The first mission was finding parking. We drove around for a while and finally found a parking spot in front of someone's home, a few blocks away. The street sweeper services that neighborhood on Thursdays and Fridays, so you can't park on certain sides of the surrounding streets, in the mornings... that makes finding parking even harder. The service was slow, but the staff was friendly. The food options are pretty good, and the food is fine, but nothing to write home about. I don't understand why they would want to inconvenience their customers by only accepting cash. I know that they do it to generate income from the ATM that they have inside the place, but it just seems so desperate to me, and I don't see why!? The place is always packed, they can't be hurting that bad to the point where they would have to resort to those cheap tactics. If you're right in front of it, give it a try... but, I wouldn't drive more than 5 minutes to face all the inconvenience found here... the food and service definitely don't make up for it.read more

The food was awful my omelette was not fully cooked it was extremely runny. My daughters food was decent she enjoyed the pancake however you can't really screw this up. The fruit that we ordered with our meals it was bad and a cantaloupe had gone bad and was soft and you can absolutely look at the watermelon and see the dark spots. My daughter speaking that came with her meal have a really bad seasoning it kind of taste like they put a chorizo seasoning on a strip of bacon. Who cuts chorizo seasoning or any seasoning on a child's piece of bacon for children's meal I just don't understand!? Service was OK the server seem to be nice except for when we went to check out. They also seem very annoyed when I asked for a wet cloth says that I could clean up the sticky syrup that was all over the table. The bill was out rages by the time for adults and one child had eight we ended up paying $52 and left her maybe a two dollar and 50 Cent it. I'm not sure how this place got so many good reviews I was looking forward to a good meal with my family. Instead I got a stomachache and a empty wallet. I don't think I'll be coming back to this place. I hope this review helps any people who are looking for a good place to eat that either that moved out of the area or just want to try something new. I felt like I found plenty of parking for it being a Sunday. It was a tolerable wait with plenty of chairs to sit and wait. It's CASH ONLY (or check). I got the veggie omelet, which tasted good. I also tried the veggie chorizo omelet, which was also good if you're craving chorizo. The prices are good, most plates being less than $10. It was worth it.read more

This place has very delicious food, I love the way they cook their potatoes they are bomb. Lots of variety and everything is affortable. I'm a fan of french toast and theirs are great but the cream cheese stuffed ones have just a piece of cream cheese in the middle and it doesn't even get to melt it's just a block of cheese inside when you cut them, they are still great but look like they could get more love. read more

I was heading towards my frd house in Long Beach and wanted to have breakfast of American and had a look in yelp and found this place. I was very very happy with service and old lady, she was so patient as I was visiting for the first time and helped me in choosing food. Don't let that early morning line wrapped around the building deter you....If you want a quality breakfast and cup of Joe this is the place to go. I really dig the Baja breakfast burrito and the French toast, I could live of the both of those alone. They seat you pretty fast as no one tends to linger for too long after their meal, the service at this place is impeccable....very lovely people that run this place. Waited 30minutes to get a table, 5 minutes to order, 40 to get my food. However food is delicious and large portions. You can serve your coffee cup upon arrival and enjoy it while you wait for your table. They do not have a food letter grade yet, according to the notice posted the health department did not fine mayor findings on the inspection of March 2017. Pancake is pretty good being packed with walnuts and banana then topped with more banana and whip cream. Whip cream is not the greatest, so I'd forego that the next time. Fresh lemonade hits the spot and is quite refreshing to have with the meal.read more

Great breakfast. I don't know what was so special about the fresh fruit, but I loved it. I also appreciated that the wait staff did all jobs for all tables: they all took orders, served food and coffee, busted tables and checked on us.
